Three Moldovan policemen arrested in case of beaten young man, dead in prison, placed under home arrest
Chisinau, 22 September /MOLDPRES/ - The three policemen suspected of having beaten a young man, Andrei Braguta, who died in the penitentiary, have been released from preventive arrest and placed under home arrest for 30 days. Judges of the Chisinau court took a decision to this effect today.
Under the magistrates’ ruling, the law-enforcers are to stay in home arrest till 22 October and, meanwhile, prosecutors can contest the decision at the Chisinau-based Court of Appeal.
The case prosecutor, Ruslan Lupascu, said that he would consider the conclusions by judges and most likely would contest the today’s ruling.
According to data by the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG), the policemen detained are the decision-makers who were on duty on the night when Andrei Braguta was brought to police. Yet, when Braguta was maltreated by inmates in ward, they did not act.
On 21 September, PG said that another ten policemen are suspected of inhuman and degrading treatment in the Braguta file. All the law-enforcers are employees of the remand prison of the Chisinau Police.
Andrei Braguta, aged 31, died in suspect conditions at the penitentiary on 26 August, after he had been detained for exceeding the speed limit. Authorities say that the cause of the death was pneumonia, while the man’s relatives say that he died after being beaten.
