United Nations official says what Moldova is doing is impressive, worth being admired
Chisinau, 10 March /MOLDPRES/ - The situation is really critical, as we face the greatest crisis of refugees since the World War II. What Moldova is doing is an impressive thing and worth being admired. Or, we had much experience with refugees, but we have not seen such a mobilization like in Moldova. The representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Central Europe, Roland Schilling, made statements to this effect at a joint news conference with the government’s secretary general, Dumitru Udrea, in Chisinau today.
„Moldova is not a rich country; namely therefore, the reaction of the population, who provide assistance continuously, to a human tragedy, deserves every respect. We are aware of the government’s effort, as well as of each citizen; yet, we understand that our time, of the international community, has come to get involved and help,’’ Schilling said.
In the context, the UN official said that ‘’a document will be finished on 10 or 11 March, in which we will urge the international community to help manage this crisis.’’ ‘’At the first stage, there will be an assistance worth 120 million dollars, a sum which can be multiplied,’’ Roland Schilling noted.
According to the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the Central Europe, the assistance which is to come is not only for the refugees, but also for Moldova’s citizens and authorities, so that they have where to give support from.
„This aid is just the beginning; the other ones will come too, as the government’s resources are limited and we cannot always rely on volunteers. I would like to thank Moldova for the effort made,’’ Roland Schilling added.
For his part, Dumitru Udrea unveiled the latest information from the Single Crisis Management Centre. Inter alia, Udrea said that, at present, about 6,000 places for refugees were available in Moldova, noting that all those in need can call the Centre’s green line - 080080011.
