Moldova's wrestler wins country’s first medal at U17 World Championships in Baku

Freestyle wrestler Margarita Lisita has won the bronze medal at the U17 World Wrestling Championships, recently held in Baku, Azerbaijan, thus bringing the first medal for Moldova at the current edition of the competition.

The athlete from Taraclia climbed the podium in the 65 kg category, after a run in which she returned to the medal race through the repechage rounds. In the quarterfinals, Margarita Lisita was narrowly defeated, 12–13, by Kazakhstan’s Aisha Abdimalik, who would later become world vice-champion in this weight class.

In the repechage, the Moldovan wrestler won convincingly, 11–0, against Eve Elisabeth Skrocki from the United States of America, qualifying for the bronze-medal match.

In the bout for the bronze medal, Margarita Lisita defeated Greek wrestler Vasiliki Karavanou 5–0, securing third place on the world podium.

According to the Education and Research Ministry, this performance confirms the sportswoman’s upward trajectory, as she also won a bronze medal last year at the U15 European Championships.

The U17 World Wrestling Championships are taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, during July 27-August 2, bringing together the best young wrestlers in the world.
