The traditional nourishment of the Moldovans imposes a classification of the dishes, depending on certain holidays, fasting periods or occasions, when they are cooked on purpose and in larger quantities.

At the important events in the man’s life, such as the baptizing, wedding, funerals and calendar holidays, people cook special, tasty, appetizing and varied dishes, which are in accordance with the people’s traditions. Many of the dishes of the family’s ceremonial differ from the ones cooked every day through the number, quality, technique of cooking, as well as the role of the dishes. Some dishes and food products are used as symbols when making some rituals.

In the end of the 20th century, different recipes were registered, which are cooked at family festivities and their number reached 30 and presently even exceed this number.

The most frequent dishes at Moldovans’ Christmas feasts

The Moldovan dishes are presently known far beyond the country’s borders and namely grape leaf or cabbage rolls, pies, wine, etc.

The people who celebrate Christmas according to the new style have already started making the holiday menu, Most often, at feasts, Moldovans have on their tables traditional dishes, such as meat croquettes, smoked food and fish, meat jelly and unfortunately, very few fresh vegetables, fruits and salads.

At Christmas, the Moldovans’ most frequent dishes are meat croquettes, schnitzel, sausage made from swine’s entrails, meat jelly, Olivier salad, salami and sausages,  smoked meat and fish, sandwich cakes.

MOLDPRES wishes you to enjoy holidays full with the favourite dishes, with your beloved and close people! A Happy New year!
