EU countries agree to open first negotiation cluster with Moldova; European Commission President: “Enlargement remains one of EU’s greatest success stories”

All European Union member states today agreed to open the first chapter of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. Thus, at the first Intergovernmental Conference, due on June 15, this year, the examination of the Cluster on fundamental issues – the backbone of the accession process – will start. President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has made statements to this effect.

According to the European official, with this decision, the European Union has taken a major step in the accession process.

“Cluster 1 covers the core values and principles on which the European Union is built, from the rule of law to strong democratic institutions. The EU’s decision is a recognition of the determination, courage and sustained work demonstrated by both countries in advancing reforms, even in the face of immense challenges,” said Ursula von der Leyen.

She also stressed that “enlargement stays one of the European Union’s greatest success stories and the best investment in our common future.”

“Enlargement is a strategic choice. The European Union’s offer of peace, stability and opportunities is unmatched. By bringing our nations closer together, we strengthen peace, security and prosperity across the European continent. In a world marked by growing uncertainty, a larger European Union is in our common interest,” added Ursula von der Leyen.

The 27 member states of the European Union today unanimously adopted the common negotiating position for the official opening of the first group of chapters – “Fundamental values”, the cluster that underpins the entire process of preparation for EU accession.

The second Intergovernmental Conference between Moldova and the European Union will take place in Luxembourg on June 15. The delegation of Moldova will be headed by Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu.
