European Parliament President: “Enlargement is our most powerful geopolitical tool, and Ukraine and Moldova belong in the EU”
The EU member states have given the green light to start accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. Enlargement is our most powerful geopolitical tool, and Ukraine and Moldova have their place in Europe. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola today conveyed a message to this effect.
The European official said that a larger Europe was a stronger and safer Europe.
“Opening the first negotiating chapters on democracy, justice and the rule of law highlights both the progress made by the two countries and their commitment to European values. All this is happening while they continue to face aggression, threats and intimidation coming from Russia,” said Roberta Metsola.
The 27 member states of the European Union today unanimously adopted the common negotiating position for the official opening of the first group of chapters – “Fundamental values”, the cluster that underpins the entire process of preparation for EU accession.
The official opening of Cluster 1 is to take place during the second Intergovernmental Conference Moldova – European Union, which will be held in Luxembourg on June 15. The delegation of Moldova will be led by Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu.
Cluster 1, entitled “Fundamental values”, is the first group of negotiating chapters in the process of accession to the European Union and includes such areas as: rule of law, functioning of democratic institutions, public administration reform, the judicial system and fundamental rights.
