BITEI Festival 2026 opens in Chisinau; event's programme

Chisinau starting from today becomes the capital of performing arts with the launch of the BITEI 2026 International Performing Arts Festival. For ten days, actors, directors and theatre companies from 11 countries will perform on the stages of the city’s theatres, in a programme that brings together theatre, music and dance performances.

This year’s edition is held under the slogan, BITEI – The place where art inspires freedom, and offers the public 22 contemporary productions, ranging from reinterpreted classical plays to stage experiments and choreographic performances. In parallel, the festival will include meetings with artists, debates and creative workshops dedicated to young actors and directors.

The events will take place at the Eugène Ionesco National Theatre, the Mihai Eminescu National Theatre and the A. P. Chekhov Russian State Drama Theatre.

The festival will be inaugurated with the premiere of the play, The Murder of Gonzago, by Nedyalko Yordanov, directed by Petru Vutcarau. The production brings to the fore such subjects as power, manipulation and the condition of the artist, in a reinterpretation inspired by the Shakespearean universe.

Among the special guests of this edition, there are Maia Morgenstern, Matei Visniec and Giorgi Tavadze, who will lead workshops and hold meetings with the public.

The BITEI Festival is organized by the Eugène Ionesco National Theatre and the Culture Ministry and is considered one of the most important cultural platforms dedicated to the performing arts in Moldova. The first edition of the festival took place in 1994.
