Old Orhei designated Destination of the Year 2026 in Moldova

Orheiul Vechi (Old Orhei) has been named the winner of the regional competition, Destination of the Year 2026 in Moldova, one of the main initiatives dedicated to promoting authentic and sustainable tourist destinations in Romania and Moldova.

According to the Culture Ministry, this distinction reconfirms the status of Orheiul Vechi as one of the most popular tourist destinations of the country. The institution notes that the cultural and natural reserve is visited annually by over 150,000 people.

Located less than an hour from Chisinau, the Orheiul Vechi area offers tourists such activities as hiking and cycling routes, kayaking, paragliding, birdwatching, horse and carriage rides, as well as gastronomic workshops and accommodation in traditional guesthouses in nearby villages.

At the same time, the reserve hosts more major cultural and tourism events every year, including DescOperă, the Wolves Festival, and Miorița Fest. According to the Culture Ministry, these events help promote the cultural and tourism heritage of  Moldova both nationally and internationally.

The Ministry thanked local communities, entrepreneurs and partners involved in developing and promoting the destination and announced that it would continue to support projects dedicated to enhancing the country’s cultural and natural heritage.
