Moldovan PM conveys message on International Day of Families

Families need not only kind words, but also support. Supportive policies that help parents, provide more opportunities for children and make people’s lives simpler. The authorities continue building a state that understands that strong families mean a stronger country. Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu today delivered a message to this effect, on the occasion of the International Day of Families.

The PM noted that the family is one of the most important pillars of a healthy and strong society.

“Today, we celebrate the International Day of Families, one of the most important pillars of a healthy and strong society. Families need not only kind words, but also support. Supportive policies that help parents, offer more opportunities for children and make people’s lives simpler,” said the prime minister.

He emphasized that, in recent years, the government had increased the one-time birth allowance to 21,886 lei and provides a monthly payment of 1,000 lei for each child up to the age of two.

Access to nurseries has also been expanded, with over 5,000 new places planned for 2026–2027, while the budget allocated for nurseries has increased from 18 million to 385 million lei. At the same time, lower secondary school students benefit from free meals.

For parents, the authorities have created more flexible conditions: mothers can return to work earlier, without losing their allowance; fathers can request child care leave and the leave periods can be shared between parents.

“We are also investing in children’s education – through a cultural voucher of 1,000 lei for teenagers and through the development of a network of free after-school clubs across the country. And so that families spend less time dealing with institutions, more and more services are available digitally, including via the EVO app. We know it will never be enough. But we continue building a state that understands strong families mean a stronger country,” concluded Alexandru Munteanu.

The International Day of Families was established by the UN General Assembly on 20 September 1993 and represents an opportunity to raise awareness about the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families. Moldova has been marking the International Day of Families since 2010.

On the occasion of the International Day of Families, the Labour and Social Protection Ministry invites families from all over the country to a wide-ranging programme of activities at the Family Festival, organized at the Botanical Garden of Chisinau on May 16.
