ARCHIVES' Chronicle // Sergei Lunchevici’s virtuosity brought back to public eye: rare 1966 recording published by National Archives Agency of Moldova

The State Information Agency MOLDPRES today pays tribute to the legendary violinist and conductor, Sergei Lunchevici, on the 92nd anniversary of his birth. On this occasion, a collector’s video recording that captures the artist’s genius has been brought out from the national film treasury.

The video document, provided by the National Archives Agency (ANA), dates back to 1966 and was filmed in Riga, during the Festival of Moldovan Culture in the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic. In the footage, Sergei Lunchevici appears alongside the emblematic folk music orchestra “Fluieraș”, performing with remarkable sensitivity the Ballad for Violin and Orchestra by Ciprian Porumbescu.

Born in Chisinau on April 29, 1934, Sergei Lunchevici remains in the history of Moldova’s culture as a pillar of both folk and academic music. For decades, he led the “Fluieraș” orchestra, turning it into a true cultural ambassador of Moldova on the great stages of the world.

The performance of Porumbescu’s ballad, captured on this film, proves the artist’s versatility, as he managed to combine the technical rigor of classical violin with the profound emotion characteristic of the Romanian spirit.

Sergei Lunchevici passed away on August 15, 1995, leaving behind an invaluable artistic legacy and a school of performance that continues to inspire young musicians. Today, the National Philharmonic from Chisinau proudly bears his name, keeping alive the memory of the one who was called the “last lăutar” (last fiddler) of the 20th century.
