Universal Day of the Romanian Blouse marked at European Commission's headquarters for the first time

The Universal Day of the Romanian Blouse, marked annually on June 24, has been  celebrated for the first time at the European Commission headquarters in Brussels, in the Berlaymont building. The event highlighted the traditional Romanian blouse, a symbol of identity and cultural heritage from Romania and Moldova.

The event was held under the patronage of the European Commission's Executive Vice President, Roxana Minzatu. Attending the event was European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, who wore a blouse from Moldova.

"I bought this blouse in Moldova. I visited this country several times, and I like it because the blouse is part of the identity. I believe it is very important to maintain this identity," said European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, during the event.

European officials emphasized the importance of preserving traditions and reaffirmed their strong support for the European path of Moldova.

"The blouse is not just a shirt. Every symbol tells a story. It is an expression of patience, work and love, and a source of pride for all those who respect their roots. There are no two identical blouses in the world," said Ambassador of Moldova to the EU Daniela Morari.

The event was organized with the support of the “Șezătoare Bruxelles’’ (Evenning Sitting Brussels) group and included the first exhibition of traditional blouses hosted by the European Commission. The public could admire authentic pieces, hand-sewn with embroidery and symbols showing the cultural diversity of the Romanian space.

On May 8-12, 2025, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos made an official visit to Moldova, in the context of Europe Day. The agenda included both official meetings in Chisinau and trips to the territory – to Ungheni, Orhei, Balti, Cahul and Comrat.  In the south of the country, the European official visited the Congaz settlement, where she met local entrepreneurs and visited the Gagauz Sofrasi ethnographic complex, financed by the European Union. The visit reconfirmed the EU's support for local development, culture promotion and gender equality.
