President Maia Sandu welcomed High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas in Chisinau today.

The talks focused on the steps Moldova is taking in the EU accession process, including reforms in the field of justice, strengthening institutions and fighting corruption. They also discussed the security challenges faced by Moldova in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine, as well as the increasingly active role of the country as a partner and contributor to regional security.

The European Union supports the strengthening of peace and security in Moldova, including through the European Peace Facility, under which it has allocated 190 million euros since 2021. These funds have helped equip the armed forces with equipment and transport vehicles, and a new radar is to be installed in the coming months. The purchased equipment has already proven its concrete usefulness, including in managing the recent water supply crisis caused by the pollution of the Dniester River, following a Russian attack on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.

“We are counting on the continuation of this support—to build an efficient defense system that will protect our citizens from present and future threats. With every investment in our security capabilities, Moldova becomes a stronger partner—for the stability of the region, for the security of the Union’s eastern border and for the European project as a whole,” said President Maia Sandu.

For her part, Kaja Kallas announced that she would propose to the member states that funding for Moldova through the European Peace Facility be doubled, which would reach up to 120 million euros per year. This would represent the largest assistance measure ever granted to a beneficiary country, after Ukraine.
