Moldovan leadership lays flowers at Eternity Memorial Complex
President Maia Sandu, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu and Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu today took part in a commemorative event honoring those who lost their lives in the Second World War. The officials laid flowers at the Eternity Memorial Complex.
Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu paid tribute to those who fell for the restoration of peace on the European continent and emphasized that, in a regional context marked by war and threats, the lessons of history must be kept alive.
“Regrettably, the Russian Federation has not learned its lesson. Moldova is heading toward the European Union — a space that means peace, stability and prosperity for our citizens,” said Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu.
President Maia Sandu stressed that the war launched by Russia against Ukraine had profoundly changed perceptions of the value of peace and security in the region: “Since 2022, when Russia attacked Ukraine, we all understand much more deeply the meaning of peace and we value, more than ever, the need to preserve it. We are grateful to Ukraine, which continues to resist and thanks to this courage of the Ukrainians, Moldovans are able to live in peace.”
“It is a day of remembrance, of the memory of those who are forced to fight, so that we can live in peace,” said Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu.
Over 70 million people lost their lives in the Second World War, including 56,000 Moldovans. Presently, there are 14 surviving participants in the Second World War in Moldova. On the occasion of May 9, each of them received financial assistance in the amount of 30,000 lei.
