VIDEO // Moldova bids farewell to genius: Composer Eugen Doga laid to rest today

The great composer Eugen Doga was laid to rest today, to the applause of those who cherished his music, personality, and the cultural legacy he left to Moldova’s people. Hundreds of people, officials, artists, friends and admirers bid farewell to the one who composed the soundtrack of an entire century. The composer was buried at the Central Cemetery on Armeneasca Street from Chisinau.

At the commemoration rally, Prime Minister Dorin Recean emphasized at the unifying role of Eugen Doga's music.

“Eugen Doga united us all. Eugen Doga left behind much beauty. He was decorated, applauded, studied as a reference; his melodies were translated into hundreds of languages – but he always remained the same serene, modest, and art-loving person. We thank him for each of the over 200 works for film and theater, the dozens of symphonic pieces, romances and waltzes. We thank him for his waltz from My Sweet and Tender Beast, considered by UNESCO as one of the four musical masterpieces of the 20th century. We thank him that his music resounded at the opening of the Olympic Games in 1980, 2014, and 2022, and brought Moldova to the world stages,” the prime minister noted.

Minister of Culture Sergiu Prodan emphasized for MOLDPRES the importance of Eugen Doga's work, which he considers a lasting legacy of national culture.

“Eugen Doga represented, represents and will represent an era of our parents, which left a deep imprint on the national culture. Eugen Doga was the sacred pillar of culture in all fields of artistic activity. I hope that our generation can bring to our culture such pillars, who will ensure that the great legacy of Doga is not lost,” said

Eugen Doga passed away on June 3, 2025, at the age of 88. He was one of the greatest contemporary Romanian composers, author of over 200 symphonic works, film music, chamber pieces, children's songs and choral works.

Among his most known creation, there is the waltz from the movie, My Sweet and Tender Beast, considered one of the most beautiful waltzes in the world, the vocal-symphonic cycles on the verses of Mihai Eminescu and Veronica Micle, as well as music for films directed by Emil Loteanu.

Eugen Doga was declared Man of the Millennium by UNESCO, and in 2007, his music was included in the world cultural heritage. He received distinctions and titles in Moldova, Romania and other countries.
