Acting Minister of Energy inspects works at Chișinău Electrical Substation
Acting Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu paid a visit today to Chișinău Electrical Substation to check the state of preparations ahead of its energization and that of the Vulcănești–Chișinău Overhead Power Line. The official reiterated that the deadlines assumed by the contractor for completing the works must be respected.
He emphasized that the project is in a decisive phase of implementation.
“Today I returned to the Chișinău Electrical Substation to personally verify the state of preparations before the energization of this facility and of the 400 kV Vulcănești–Chișinău Overhead Power Line, the most important energy infrastructure project in recent decades. We are in a decisive stage,” said Junghietu.
According to the official, in recent weeks the control, protection and measurement equipment for the 400 kV bay has been installed and connected, while work is currently continuing on integrating the secondary circuits and carrying out the necessary checks for commissioning the entire installation.
In parallel, the protection system for the autotransformers, the most important equipment in the substation, is being finalized. The minister announced that for the first time in the Republic of Moldova a modern technology based on nitrogen injection inside the autotransformers is being implemented, which significantly reduces the risk of fires and increases the level of safety and reliability of the entire infrastructure.
While on site, the head of the Energy Ministry spoke with the contractor and technical teams about the final activities that still need to be completed before energization and reiterated that the deadlines assumed by the contractor for completing the works must be respected.
“This project is of strategic importance for the country’s energy security and can no longer afford delays. In recent weeks we have completed the construction of the line, energized the bay at the Vulcănești Electrical Substation and successfully gone through the technical stages required to connect the new infrastructure. Each stage completed brings us closer to the objective we have set: modern infrastructure, connected to the European network and capable of offering the Republic of Moldova more security, more independence and greater energy resilience,” concluded Dorin Junghietu.
The actual construction works on the Vulcănești–Chișinău overhead transmission line started in April 2024 and are part of the Power System Development Project financed by the World Bank Group. Its value is 61 million euros, of which about 27 million euros are allocated for the construction of the line.
The line has a total length of 157 km, crosses 35 localities in eight districts, and connects the Vulcănești 400 kV Electrical Substation with the Chișinău 330 kV Electrical Substation. It will be able to transmit up to 630 MVA of power, equivalent to more than 50% of the country’s required consumption during peak periods.
The construction of the Vulcănești–Chișinău power line is a project of strategic importance for our country’s energy security. The new power line will allow the transmission of electricity from Romania or other European markets to Chișinău without passing through the Moldovan power plant located in the Transnistrian region.
