A new road section on route R8.1, which connects road R8 with Arionești and Otaci and links to R14, was opened to traffic today. The modernized segment is 9.4 kilometers long and is important for easing traffic towards the Otaci border crossing point, as well as for developing cross-border economic exchanges.

The works included full modernization of the roadway, strengthening of drainage systems, and implementation of road safety measures, taking into account the heavy traffic and the large number of heavy-duty vehicles that operate in this area.

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea said at the event that the section is part of the National Program for Interconnecting the Republic of Moldova through road infrastructure.

“The Government of the Republic of Moldova aims to interconnect the north of the country with the south, where we have our maritime gateways. We have two ports, one state-owned and one private, through which economic operators export their agricultural products and more. This 9.4 km road segment that we are commissioning today is part of the National Program for Interconnecting the Republic of Moldova through good roads. Good roads mean safe travel for economic agents and for citizens; that means a completely different type of economic activity,” said Vladimir Bolea.

Representatives of the National Road Administration (AND) noted that the works were carried out in compliance with quality standards.

“Today we are here to provide citizens with a modern route, built in accordance with the highest quality standards. It is the result of hard work and constant cooperation between the contractors and the team of the National Road Administration. This road will not only reduce travel times, but will significantly increase the level of safety for all road users, completely transforming the transit experience in this area,” said the AND representative.

The new section will facilitate access for emergency services and contribute to the development of local businesses through better connections with the center of the country and neighboring states. At the same time, the modernized infrastructure is expected to support freight transport and population mobility in the northern region of the country.
