Great National Dictation to be held on Romanian Language Day

The fourth edition of the Great National Dictation will be held on 31 August, on Romanian Language Day, in the Great National Assembly Square. People who wish to take part in the event and test their knowledge of the Romanian language can register by filling in an online form by 24 August. Those who achieve the best results in the dictation will be awarded during a public event.

Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun said today at a press conference that the event has already become a tradition and that this year the organizers aim to turn the Great National Assembly Square, for a few hours, into the largest classroom in the Republic of Moldova.


“On 31 August, on Romanian Language Day, we will meet in the Great National Assembly Square and, for a few hours, we will turn this space into the largest classroom in the Republic of Moldova,” the minister said.


According to the official, this year’s event has a special significance in the context of marking 35 years since the proclamation of the independence of the Republic of Moldova.


“This year’s edition of the Great National Dictation has a special significance, as in 2026 the Republic of Moldova will mark 35 years of independence. These are 35 years in which we have built our institutions, in which we have gone through difficult periods and have learned what it truly means to build a state. But they are also 35 years in which we have become increasingly confident in who we are and where we want to go. And the Romanian language is part of this process and of our history. Independence does not mean only borders, institutions, and state symbols; it also means a society’s ability to know its identity, to respect its language and culture, and at the same time to build a state in which every citizen feels part of a shared future. That is why, for us and we hope for everyone, the Great Dictation is not just about grammar; it is, first and foremost, about values. At the Great Dictation we do not come only to prove that we know the Romanian language well; we come, above all, out of respect and appreciation for it,” said Dan Perciun.


The Minister of Education invited everyone interested to participate in the event, emphasizing that it is an opportunity to celebrate the Romanian language and to test their knowledge.


“The Great National Dictation is not a test, and those who choose to participate do so for the pleasure of celebrating the Romanian language together. As in previous years, we invite everyone to join us on the 31st in the Great National Assembly Square. Come, even if you think you still do not write correctly enough, even if the last dictation you wrote was 20 years ago. Come with your children, parents, and colleagues. Come to celebrate our Romanian language together,” concluded Dan Perciun.


Registrations for the event were launched today by the Ministry of Education and Research and will remain open until 24 August. To take part in the Great National Dictation, those interested must fill in an online form, available on the official page of the Ministry.

The dictation will be held on 31 August, starting at 09:00. Participants will be provided with sheets of paper, pens, water, and caps.

The dictations will be checked by an extended committee made up of linguists, specialists from higher education institutions, representatives of the Ministry of Education and Research, as well as other qualified persons. The evaluation will be based on the rules laid down in the Orthographic, Orthoepic and Morphological Dictionary of the Romanian Language, 3rd edition, published under the auspices of the Romanian Academy in 2022. After evaluation, the papers will be scanned and sent to participants by email.

Those who achieve the best results in the dictation will be awarded during a public event.

The Great National Dictation is organized by the Ministry of Education and Research under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Moldova and aims to celebrate the Romanian language, as well as to promote correct speaking and writing among all citizens.

The event has reached its fourth edition, having been organized for the first time in 2023. Last year’s edition saw a record number of participants, with over 2,000 people from across the country taking part.
