Government seeks external support for energy compensation in winter 2026–2027
The government has called on external partners to contribute to the Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund for the 2026–2027 cold season. The 550 million lei needed for energy compensation in November 2026 has already been secured in the state budget, while resources for January–March 2027 are currently being determined. Finance Minister Victoria Belous made the statements today.
According to the official, the authorities are awaiting responses from external partners regarding possible financial contributions. If no additional funding sources are identified, the expenses for compensation during the first three months of next year will be covered from the general revenues of the state budget.
The amounts required for January–March 2027 are currently being assessed as part of the preparation of the draft state budget law for next year. The 550 million lei allocated for November compensation was secured following the budget revision approved in October.
Referring to discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Victoria Belous said that the institution is not requesting a sudden reduction of the budget deficit to 3% in 2026 or 2027, but is recommending a gradual adjustment of 0.5 percentage points per year. For 2027, a deficit target of 4.5% is being considered.
The minister stressed that achieving the budgetary objectives requires all state institutions to use public resources efficiently.
“Every ministry is tasked with using every leu efficiently, while also ensuring that we implement the measures we have undertaken as a country,” Victoria Belous said.
