European Commission's vice president appoints new EU Ambassador to Moldova

The new representative of the European Union in Moldova will be Ambassador Iwona Piorko, who will succeed Janis Mazeiks. The announcement of her appointment was made by Vice President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Presently, Iwona Piorko serves as the EU Ambassador to Singapore. Previously, among other positions, she held the one of Head of Unit for International Affairs at the DG Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs of the European Commission.

Iwona Piorko said that she was honored to take over the office of EU Ambassador to Moldova.

“I look forward to working with the excellent EU Delegation team in Moldova. Thank you, Janis Mazeiks, for raising the EU-Moldova relations to a new level,” the ambassador wrote on platform X.

Born in Poland, Iwona Piorko, aged 52, studied at the University of Warsaw and the College of Europe in Bruges, Natolin campus in Poland.

Piorko started her career as an academic assistant at the College of Europe, after which she had worked at the European Commission, Directorate-General for Justice, Freedom and Security. Later, she was a member of the cabinet of the European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle and of the cabinet of Vice President of the European Commission, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.

Iwona Piorko speaks six languages: Polish (native), English, French, Spanish, German and Russian at a basic level.
