Over 60% of adults in Moldova have weight issues

More than 63.9% of adults in the Republic of Moldova are overweight, and 22.7% are obese. The data was made public by the Ministry of Health in the context of marking World Food Day.

This year's event is marked under the theme "Hand in hand for safer food and a better future" and calls for global cooperation for a safe and sustainable food system.

The Ministry of Health warns that malnutrition and obesity coexist in our country. STEPS 2021 study shows that among adolescents, 16% are overweight and 4% are obese. 2.5% of the population suffers from malnutrition.

To address the challenges, the Ministry of Health and the National Agency for Public Health are implementing nutritional policies through the National Program for the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases 2023–2027, focusing on reducing salt, sugar, and trans fats consumption and promoting a balanced diet.

The actions are supported by the Moldovan-Swiss project "Healthy Life: Reducing the Burden of Non-communicable Diseases," funded by the Swiss Government.

Also in the context of marking World Food Day, on October 20, 2025, the third edition of the International Symposium "Modern Nutrition: Challenges and Opportunities" will take place at USMF "Nicolae Testemițanu," featuring the topic "Promoting Healthy Eating through Behavior Change," bringing together experts from the Republic of Moldova, Switzerland, the USA and Romania.
