Moldovan environment minister says Moldova backs EU's policy climate neutrality, cutting emissions of greenhouse gas
Chisinau, 19 November /MOLDPRES/ - Environment Minister Sergiu Lazarencu, on a visit to Baku, today participated in a Ministerial Roundtable, Just Transition. The official emphasized the importance of this process, which is essential for the fulfillment of the global climate goals, as well as for ensuring a fair economic and social transformation.
„The Just Transition does not regard only the cutting of the emissions, but also the making sure that all people, no matter their social state or geographical location, have an opportunity to flourish in a sustainable economy, with low emissions of carbon. The government must engage in policies which are to balance the environment goals with the social and economic needs of the most vulnerable people,’’ Lazarencu said.
The minister also underlined Moldova’s commitments to support the European Union’s policy as to the climate neutrality and to enhance the national ambition for reducing the emissions of greenhouse gas. ‘’Although Moldova has a poor contribution to the carbon emissions globally, it faces a high risk of vulnerability to the climate changes, highlighted through increases in temperatures and their impact on the agriculture and ecosystems. In the context, the main goal of Moldova’s National Programme on Adaptation to Climate Changes is to support the vulnerable sectors, such as the agriculture, energy and health. These fields, which are essential for the sustainable development, directly depend on the access to proper resources, on the implementation of innovating solutions and on an efficient international cooperation. The programme shows the country’s commitment to meet the climate challenges through integrated policies and global partnerships,’’ Sergiu Lazarencu said.
Also, the Moldovan environment minister called for international cooperation, in order to ensure the success of the Just Transition. Lazarencu underlined that ‘’it is essential that we support the developing countries, both financially and through the development of the technical and institutional capacities.’’
The Just Transition Programme of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) provides an important framework, in order to help the countries integrate the social equity in their climate policies, making sure that the economic vulnerability is tackled and that the benefits of the climate actions are distributed fairly. The programme sees the securing of the substantial and sustainable financing for these efforts, especially through multilateral mechanisms, such as the Green Climate Fund, in order to direct the resources to the countries which are mostly in need.
