Romania reaffirms support for Moldova on all fronts

President of Romania Nicusor Dan has reaffirmed Bucharest's strong commitment to Moldova in an interview with the German publication, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, before his official visit to Berlin. The Romanian official emphasized that Romania would continue to support Moldova in the face of external pressures, especially in the context of regional tensions.

"We are very interested in what happens in Moldova. Approximately one million people there also hold Romanian citizenship. We will support them on more fronts," said the head of the Romanian state.

He highlighted the progress already made in energy interconnection between the two countries, noting that "there are connections between our gas and electricity networks, and other projects are planned for the future, including in infrastructure."

Nicusor Dan emphasized that Romania would observe the will of the citizens of Moldova regarding the future of the state. Although he openly expressed personal support for the unification of the two countries, the Bucharest leader stressed that that no unilateral actions would be taken.

"Personally, I want a unification with Moldova, but I fully respect the will of the people in the neighboring country," said Nicusor Dan.

According to him, support for unification in Moldova stands around 35 per cent, and that is why, Romania will continue to focus its efforts on cooperation and practical support.

The statements come in the context of Moldova facing complex challenges in security and European integration, while Romania has been constantly one of the most active supporters of Chișinău, both bilaterally and within European institutions.

In the same interview, President Nicusor Dan reaffirmed the solidity of the strategic partnership with the United States and Romania's commitment to NATO, rejecting speculations on external influences in the Romanian domestic policy.
