Moldova, Egypt discuss expanding economic relations

The Republic of Moldova and Egypt are discussing the expansion of economic relations, including in the trade and investment sectors. Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt Badr Abdelatty addressed the issue in New York.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two officials reviewed the priorities on the agenda of bilateral relations and discussed expanding cooperation between the two states, including in the tourism sector.

Mihai Popșoi expressed the Republic of Moldova’s interest in increasing exports to the Egyptian market, including agri-food products, as well as attracting new Egyptian investments to the country.

In this context, the Moldovan official emphasized the importance of continuing negotiations on concluding a Free Trade Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the Arab Republic of Egypt.

They also discussed harnessing tourism potential and diversifying tourism offerings, including by promoting the cultural heritage of both states.

In addition, Mihai Popșoi and Badr Abdelatty exchanged views on major regional and international developments, in the context of the war in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East, as well as their impact on regional security.

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Moldova and the Arab Republic of Egypt were established on February 13, 1992.

Popșoi is paying a working visit to New York, United States, this week. The official is part of the national delegation led by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan, which is attending the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly and related events.
