Moldovan parliament speaker urges students not to be afraid to express their ideas, wishes

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu has conveyed a message to students of the State University of Moldova (USM), urging them to cultivate independent thinking, freely express their ideas and wishes and take responsibility for their own decisions. The message was delivered at the first edition of the Generations of Excellence gala, organized today to mark the 80th anniversary of USM.





The speaker said that he had returned to the university, where he studied at the Faculty of History, and noted that USM was “a second home” to him.

“I feel lucky—as a student here at USM, I had professors who, in addition to providing academic training, instilled in students the responsibility of being active citizens of the country,” Igor Grosu said.







The parliament speaker also recalled his student years, when, during his first year, he received a grade of 5 in history, because he and his colleagues were taking part in strikes.

“I was the one who received a 5 in history during my first year, because I was participating in strikes together with my colleagues and no longer had time for studying. That was when I discovered that I had professors who understood how important it was to build the society in which you want to live. I received reprimands, but also a tacit understanding,” Igor Grosu said.

Addressing today’s students, the speaker urged them to trust their own ideas and take responsibility for their choices.

“Alongside everything else, they should cultivate independent thinking, not be afraid to express their ideas and wishes, and take responsibility for their decisions. This is what I learned as a student at USM, thanks to my professors,” Igor Grosu said.

At the end, the parliament speaker congratulated the State University of Moldova on the 80th anniversary of its foundation.

“Happy anniversary, USM! You have reached 80 years of excellence!” Igor Grosu said.





USM marked its 80th anniversary this week, as well as a century of Romanian-language education in Bessarabia.

The ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of USM brought together more than 600 guests on September 24, including members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Chisinau—ambassadors from countries such as Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Switzerland, Greece, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, the United Kingdom, Poland, Qatar, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United States, as well as the Delegation of the European Union. Members of the academic community from more than 15 countries, including Japan, Vietnam, Australia, Ukraine, the United States, and others, attended the festive meeting as well.

The State University of Moldova is the first higher education institution with university status established in Moldova. Founded on October 1, 1946, under the initial name of Chisinau State University, it has built an impeccable reputation nationally and internationally over the years. Its establishment was a cornerstone for the development and consolidation of the higher education in the country.
