Increased road safety – vehicles not meeting technical requirements to have registration automatically suspended
Government has approved a draft law that introduces a mechanism for the temporary suspension of the registration of vehicles that do not meet the technical requirements to be allowed in road traffic.
According to the draft, registration will be suspended if the periodic technical inspection has expired, as well as when, during the technical inspection or in traffic, major or dangerous technical deficiencies are found. If dangerous deficiencies are identified, the vehicle will be towed.
The corresponding note will be entered automatically in the State Vehicle Register, based on data transmitted through the information systems of the competent authorities.
The suspension of registration is a temporary measure. The vehicle may no longer be used in traffic until the issues are remedied, without its registration being canceled. A period of 30 calendar days will be granted for the elimination of the deficiencies and the performance of a new technical inspection. The suspension will end once the technical inspection certificate is issued, confirming that the vehicle meets the technical standards.
Currently, national legislation does not expressly regulate the mechanism for suspending a vehicle’s registration in cases where the vehicle no longer meets the technical conditions required for participation in road traffic. Consequently, there is no measure to stop the use of vehicles that no longer comply with technical requirements.
The draft aims to increase road safety, reduce the risks generated by vehicles with technical deficiencies, and align national legislation with the provisions of the European Union on vehicle registration documents.
