Moldovan parliamentary commission for national security and defense to consider case of minor dead in military unit in Cahul

The case of the minor who has died in a military unit in Cahul will be examined on the platform of the parliamentary commission for national security, defense and public order. Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu made statements to this effect today.

The speaker emphasized that representatives of more state institutions would be invited to the commission’s meeting, including institutions from the defense sector, the Interior Ministry and the Health Ministry.

“I have discussed with the chair of the parliamentary commission for national security, defense and public order, Lilian Carp. The proposal is for these discussions to take place on the commission’s platform. As far as I know, a meeting has already been announced, at which all defense institutions, the General Staff, the Interior Ministry, Health Ministry, everyone involved, will be invited,” said Igor Grosu before the today’s parliament meeting.

The official specified that the format of the event is not yet known and would be later established by the commission.

As for the request of the parliamentary opposition for the resignation of Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatii, Igor Grosu underlined that the minister presented his position on this matter on May 13, noting that a final decision would be taken after the investigation is completed.

“The minister stated very clearly – first he wants to see the investigation, the results of the investigation, to have all circumstances clarified, whether the protocols on carrying weapons were respected, whether the person was trained. So, let us look at all the particularities,” Igor Grosu concluded.

At the end of last week, a 16‑year‑old minor died in a military unit in Cahul. The police were notified after the improper handling of a firearm had led to the injury of a soldier and the death of a minor. According to the police, a 20‑year‑old contract soldier allegedly mishandled a Glock‑type weapon while he was together with a 16‑year‑old minor who was visiting another conscript soldier.

Following an accidental shot, the 18‑year‑old conscript soldier was wounded and urgently transported to the hospital. Doctors stated that he is out of any danger. As for the 16‑year‑old minor, it was initially announced that he went into shock immediately after the incident and lost consciousness. The General Police Inspectorate later informed that law enforcement officers were informed by the forensic doctor, who examined the minor’s lifeless body, that he had been pierced by the same bullet that wounded the conscript soldier.
