Moldovan president at EPC Summit says leadership to continue to work together for Moldova to become part of European Union
President Maia Sandu today participated in the European Political Community Summit held in Copenhagen, Denmark, the country that also holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union.
“I came to the European Political Community Summit with a strong mandate from the citizens to advance Moldova's accession to the European Union,” said President Maia Sandu.
The event, hosted by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, brought together 47 European leaders, heads of state and government, alongside representatives of European institutions. In the opening of the proceedings, President Maia Sandu highlighted the clear support expressed by the citizens of Moldova for European integration at the parliamentary elections of September 28. The head of state also shared the authorities' experience in countering external interference in democratic processes.
On the sidelines of the summit, President Maia Sandu hosted a meeting with more partners of Moldova, attended by President of France Emmanuel Macron, President of Romania Nicusor Dan, Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk, as well as leaders of European institutions: President of the European Council António Costa, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas. The European leaders reaffirmed their strong support for Moldova, its European path and the strengthening of its economic development.
“Our partners appreciate the firmness with which Moldovans have defended democracy and resisted interference attempts. We will continue to work together for Moldova to become part of the European Union, ensuring the country's development, peace and security,” President Maia Sandu noted after the meeting.
The head of state had a meeting with the host of the event, Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen, with whom she discussed the process of Moldova's accession to the European Union and strengthening the country's resilience to external challenges.
At the same time, in Copenhagen, the head of state had bilateral meetings with President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides and President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda. The head of state also met Prime Minister of Belgium Bart De Wever, the Prime Minister of Finland Petteri Orpo and Prime Minister of Ireland Micheál Martin. The discussions focused on Moldova's accession to the European Union, economic development and strengthening peace and security on the continent.
The Moldovan president also met President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The two leaders discussed the European path of both countries, strengthening regional security and restoring lasting peace in Ukraine. Additionally, the development of bilateral economic relations was at the center of discussions with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.
The European Political Community (EPC) was set up at an initiative by the President of France Emmanuel Macron, with the aim of promoting political dialogue, strengthening cooperation and enhancing security, stability and prosperity on the continent. The next EPC meeting will take place in Armenia in the spring of 2026.
