The vision for the reform of local public administration today was discussed at the government with the presidents of the district councils of Moldova.

Secretary General of the Government Alexei Buzu emphasized that the reform aimed to strengthen the administration of localities and provide them with greater development opportunities, while the district councils are to focus on regional development.

“We need to see what the mandate of the district councils will look like in the new structure of local public administration. We want a mandate as an accelerator of regional development,” said the Secretary General of the Government.

The participants in meeting addressed the main perspectives on implementing the reform, the distribution of competences after the reform, strengthening the capacity of mayors and mayor’s offices and encouraging inter-municipal cooperation.

The presidents of the district councils highlighted the importance of the reform, the need for its careful and gradual implementation, and assured that they would be actively involved in drafting the concept. They also mentioned that, in the upcoming period, they would further promote the benefits of voluntary amalgamation, with aspects discussed to make the process simpler.

“It is a complex reform, and we want an open dialogue to identify the main reservations and see how we can carry out this reform in a qualitative way and for the benefit of citizens,” added the Secretary General of the Government, Alexei Buzu. He noted that broad discussions were being held with all parties and that more concrete provisions would be discussed at the next rounds of consultations.
