Moldovan president meets OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities
President Maia Sandu today had a meeting with OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities Christophe Kamp, on a visit to Moldova.
The head of state reiterated that protecting the rights of persons belonging to different ethnic groups and, implicitly, ensuring social cohesion stayed priorities. The Moldovan president said that the accession to the European Union was the best guarantee for the rights of all citizens, regardless of ethnicity or language, as it will bring strong institutions and equal opportunities. In the context, the head of state highlighted the progress made over the past year in the field of multilingual education and social inclusion, achieved in cooperation with the Office of the High Commissioner.
The two officials also discussed the situation in the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia. The president stressed the importance of organizing free and fair elections in the region, as well as ensuring a sound information environment. At the same time, Maia Sandu underlined that the local public administration reform did not affect the special status of the autonomy, guaranteed by the Constitution. The Moldovan president also noted that the specific character of Taraclia district would be observed.
In conclusion, the interlocutors reaffirmed their commitment to continue the cooperation between Moldova and the Office of the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities.
