Moldovan PM, head of office of European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in Moldova discuss projects funded by bank
Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu today had a meeting with Giuseppe Grimaldi, head of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) operations in Moldova. The officials examined the progress of projects implemented with EBRD’s support, aimed at rehabilitating roads and enhancing energy security.
PM Alexandru Munteanu emphasized the importance of the cooperation with the EBRD in the sustainable development of the country, highlighting the institution's role in supporting reforms and strengthening Moldova’s economy.
"The financial assistance and expertise provided by the EBRD are essential for modernizing infrastructure and increasing the competitiveness of our economy. We have a solid collaboration and a common vision. Together, through the implementation of the Growth Plan for Moldova, we will manage to bring the country closer to European standards," said the prime minister.
The interlocutors reviewed the major infrastructure projects presently under implementation in Moldova with EBRD’s support, noting the need to advance them and prioritize based on current needs.
The ongoing projects, 67 in all, target key such key areas as the modernization of roads’ and railways’ infrastructure, energy interconnection, energy efficiency, enhancing the security of gas supply, as well as improving waste management. Among the projects, there are the rehabilitation and widening of the M2 Chisinau Beltway, the rehabilitation of the Chisinau-Leuseni road, construction of the Vulcanesti-Chisinau electric line, modernization of centralized thermal energy systems in Balti and Chisinau.
A future direction is increasing access to financing for farmers, a measure complementary to the projects for modernizing irrigation systems, aimed at stimulating the productivity and resilience of the agricultural sector.
Giuseppe Grimaldi took over as head of the EBRD operations in on October 1, 2025. Since beginning its activities in our country in 1992, EBRD has invested over 2.8 billion euros in 188 projects.
