Moldova launches imPACT mission for evaluation of national cancer control system

The Health Ministry, in partnership with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), has officially launched the imPACT mission, a comprehensive assessment of the country's capabilities and needs in cancer control.

The launch event took place at the Health Ministry, with the participation of representatives on behalf of international partner organizations, health experts and heads of medical institutions involved in cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Health Minister Emil Ceban said that this mission marked "a new stage for the oncological system of Moldova - one based on an integrated vision and international standards."

"Through this mission, we aim to look with clarity and responsibility at what we have and what we lack in cancer control," emphasized Ceban.

The imPACT mission involves a participatory assessment carried out by international experts, who will visit hospitals and medical centers of Moldova, hold discussions with professionals in the field, and analyze services and data regarding oncological diagnosis and treatment.

The evaluation’s results will form the basis of the National Cancer Control Programme 2026-2030, which will contribute to strengthening the health system and grounding evidence-based public policies.

Cancer stays one of the main public health challenges in Moldova, affecting thousands of people annually. The government has declared cancer control a national priority, aiming at modernizing the Oncology Institute, improving diagnostic and treatment technologies, as well as developing specialists' skills.

The imPACT mission will analyze such key areas as prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, palliative care, specialists' education and radiation safety. It  will provide Moldova with a clear strategy for the next five years, in line with international recommendations and Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan.
