Head of State Maia Sandu took part today in swearing-in ceremony of new Prosecutor General Alexandru Machidon. In her address, the President spoke about the problems that society expects the Prosecutor’s Office to tackle — from combating corruption, drug, arms and human trafficking, to new threats such as financial and cyber crimes, including those related to interference in the democratic processes of the Republic of Moldova. “All these issues require a serious and responsible attitude,” said the head of state.

The President reiterated that the greatest risk to European integration is the ability to build a functional rule-of-law state. In this regard, the head of state stressed that it is important to continue the efforts made in this direction, which have already produced initial results. “You have my full support for a genuine rule of law that strictly serves the interests of the citizens and the state of the Republic of Moldova,” underlined the President, noting that in this process she is counting not only on the contribution of the new Prosecutor General, but also on that of the entire body of prosecutors: “I am counting on your role as manager of the institution and on the involvement and support of every employee of the Prosecutor’s Office.”

In conclusion, the head of state emphasized that only through new achievements can the credibility of the Prosecutor’s Office be fully strengthened: “We have a lot of work to do in order to restore the citizens’ full trust in the Prosecutor’s Office and in justice in general,” the President concluded.
