Import tax exemptions for Moldovans returning from diaspora: extended mechanism for 2026
Citizens of the Republic of Moldova returning permanently to the country will continue to benefit from import duty exemptions for personal goods and one vehicle. The government has approved the legislative initiative that provides for the extension of the mechanism for another year.
Based on applications submitted by 31 December 2026, benefits will be available to persons who have reached the age of 18, have Moldovan citizenship, have been abroad for at least 36 months in the last 5 years, and hold a permanent or temporary residence permit outside the Republic of Moldova.
In the case of importing a vehicle, which must be less than 10 years old, valued at 550,000 lei, and with an engine capacity not exceeding 3000 cm3, beneficiaries must hold a valid driver's license for the category of the vehicle.
The sale, gifting, renting, leasing or any other form of transferring possession or use of an imported vehicle will be prohibited for up to 3 years from the date of importation.
