Moldovan president celebrates birthday
President Maia Sandu is celebrating her birthday on May 24. The head of state turns 54.
Maia Sandu is the first female president of Moldova and is currently serving her second term as head of state. She assumed the office of president on December 24, 2020, following her victory in the presidential elections. Later, in 2024, Maia Sandu won her second presidential term, thus becoming the first politician of Moldova to whom citizens have entrusted, through direct vote, two consecutive mandates as head of state.
Previously, the head of state held the office of Moldovan prime minister and the position of education minister.
Maia Sandu was born on May 24, 1972, in the village of Risipeni, Falesti district. In 1994, she graduated from the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova, Faculty of Management. From 1995 to 1998, she studied at the Academy of Public Administration from Chisinau, getting a Master’s degree in International Relations. In 2010, she earned a Master’s degree in Public Policy after completing her studies at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, USA. Subsequently, as of June 2010 till July 2012, she served as Adviser to the Executive Director of the World Bank in Washington.
