Moldovan Central Electoral Commission imposes sanctions on officials from electoral bureaus set up for May 17 new local elections
The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) has identified irregularities and imposed sanctions on more electoral officials from the electoral bureaus set up for the new local elections from May 17.
Following the verification of data in the “E-Day” module, a component of the State Automated Information System “Elections,” the CEC found cases where voters were entered in supplementary electoral lists in violation of electoral legislation by members of electoral bureaus of polling stations established to organize the new local polls for the election of the mayors of Orhei municipality and the Taraclia town.
In the context, the CEC requested explanations from the head and secretaries of the electoral bureaus concerned regarding the identified circumstances. After analyzing the information and explanations submitted, the Commission found that the concerned persons had not checked whether the voters who came to the polls met the legal criteria to be included in the supplementary electoral lists.
“CEC firmly condemns any irregularity committed in the electoral process, especially when it is committed by electoral officials, who bear the responsibility to ensure the correctness and legality of the electoral process. Ensuring a transparent and fair electoral process is a major public interest and those involved in its administration are obliged to strictly comply with the legal framework,” the institution said.
Following the examination of the identified irregularities, the CEC ruled to apply sanctions in the form of warnings to more electoral officials – heads and secretaries of electoral bureaus.
