CEC announces silence day ahead of second round of new local mayoral elections
The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) announces a silence day before the second round of new local elections for the position of mayor, which will be held on 31 May in Rusești Noi commune, Ialoveni district, Orhei municipality, Orhei district, and the town of Taraclia, Taraclia district. Thus, during these days, electoral campaigning is strictly prohibited.
The head of the communication, public relations and media department of the CEC, Rodica Sîrbu said that during this period candidates are not allowed to participate in television or radio programs, and local public authorities and advertising distributors are obliged to remove all electoral materials placed in public spaces. The exception is information already published on the internet, which does not fall under these prohibitions.
“Continuing electoral campaigning during the prohibited period, whether by the media, competitors or citizens, constitutes an administrative offense. The sanctions provide for fines from 2,000 to 3,000 lei for individuals and from 5,000 to 7,500 lei for legal entities. Also, electoral competitors are prohibited from making transfers to or from the account marked ‘Electoral Fund’,” said Rodica Sîrbu.
On Sunday, May 31 this year, the second round of new local elections for the position of mayor will take place in Rusești Noi commune, Ialoveni district, Orhei municipality, Orhei district, and the town of Taraclia, Taraclia district. Following the results of the new local elections of May 17 this year, none of the candidates for the position of mayor in these localities obtained more than half of the validly cast votes.
