Deputy Prime Minister: Moldova increasingly respected internationally

The Republic of Moldova is benefiting from more support and openness from its European partners, and this is reflected both in foreign investments and in its growing closeness to the European Union, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi during a television program.

“The Republic of Moldova is a country that is increasingly heard and respected. Our position is taken into account by our European partners,” Popșoi said today.

The minister compared the Republic of Moldova’s position to that of a state which, although it does not have “the highest weight class,” still manages to achieve significant diplomatic results thanks to the relationships it has developed with external partners.

The official noted that external support for the Republic of Moldova has materialized through the organization of international events in Chișinău, recent visits by European leaders, and the financial assistance provided for developing the economy and strengthening energy security.

According to Popșoi, concrete benefits for citizens include the “Roam Like at Home” program and the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European SEPA payment system.

“Now, when we travel in the European area, we no longer pay those exorbitant amounts for roaming,” the minister stated.

He added that international bank transfers have become considerably cheaper after connecting to the European payment system.

During the program, Mihai Popșoi stated that the change in external perceptions of the Republic of Moldova began before the war in Ukraine and was influenced by political changes and democratic reforms in recent years.

“The Republic of Moldova has started to be viewed differently,” the minister said, recalling that in the past the country was associated with “the theft of the billion,” human trafficking, and political instability. At present, however, according to him, the Republic of Moldova is perceived as “a small country with a big heart,” including thanks to the way its citizens received Ukrainian refugees.

Popșoi also said that justice reforms, the strengthening of the rule of law, and measures to combat propaganda have contributed to improving the Republic of Moldova’s image abroad. He cited the Reporters Without Borders ranking, according to which the Republic of Moldova is the best-positioned state in the region in terms of press freedom.

“One thing is certain: the Republic of Moldova is moving in the right direction,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, noting that structural reforms take time, but the results are already being observed both by citizens and by external partners.
