Deputy Prime Minister meets with Austrian Parliamentarians

The Republic of Moldova and Austria reconfirm their shared interest in continuing political dialogue and strengthening bilateral cooperation, including by maintaining active coordination in support of our country’s European path. These topics were discussed today by Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi, who met with the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council of Austria, Petra Bayr, and Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federal Council of Austria Christine Schwarz-Fuchs.

The discussions focused on strengthening Moldovan-Austrian cooperation and intensifying bilateral political dialogue, including by leveraging existing opportunities in the economic, investment, energy, education, and parliamentary fields. The officials welcomed the positive dynamics of relations between the Republic of Moldova and Austria, as well as the high level of political and parliamentary contacts in recent years.

An important topic of the meeting was the European path of the Republic of Moldova and the support provided by Austria for advancing democratic reforms, strengthening institutional resilience, and promoting sustainable development. The officials highlighted the importance of European cooperation and solidarity in the context of current regional challenges.

Popșoi expressed gratitude for keeping the Republic of Moldova on the list of priority states for development assistance provided by Austria, support that has contributed over the years to the implementation of reforms and carrying out several projects in various key sectors.

“Thanks to the support provided by our European partners, including Austria, the Republic of Moldova is managing to advance on the reform agenda and to look with greater confidence towards its European future. We count on Austria’s support in our path towards accession to the European Union and in our efforts to strengthen democratic resilience,” Mihai Popșoi underlined.

During the discussions, the sides also exchanged views on security developments in the region, the fight against disinformation and external interference, cooperation within international organizations, as well as the importance of strengthening a rules-based international order and multilateralism.

The Austrian officials are paying a visit to the Republic of Moldova on 25–27 May. At Parliament, the deputies held meetings with Speaker Igor Grosu and Deputy Speaker Doina Gherman, with whom they discussed political dialogue, Moldova’s accession to the EU, and the projects supported by Austria in the Republic of Moldova.

The Austrian officials also held discussions with the Chair of the European Integration Committee, Marcel Spatari, as well as with the members of the committee. Today, the parliamentarians will meet with President Maia Sandu.

The agenda also includes visits to several projects implemented with Austria’s support, in partnership with the European Union. The Austrian delegation will also visit Ștefan Neaga Centre of Excellence in Arts Education and the Austrian School in Chișinău.
