Moldova hosts annual conference of banking supervisors from Central and South-Eastern Europe
Vice governors, financial experts, and representatives of banking institutions from 24 countries took part in the 38th annual conference of the Group of Banking Supervisors from Central and South-Eastern Europe (BSCEE), held in Chișinău. The event was organized in the context of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM) assuming the presidency of the regional group, a mandate taken over in December 2025.
According to the NBM, discussions at the forum focused on harmonizing banking supervision standards, managing emerging risks, digitalizing the financial sector, and strengthening the resilience of banking systems in the context of current geopolitical challenges.
An important topic addressed at the conference concerned the use of advanced technologies and artificial intelligence in banking supervision. Participants examined ways in which central banks can use these tools for real-time data processing and early identification of financial risks. Measures for regulating the algorithms used by commercial banks in automated lending processes were also discussed.
The meeting also addressed measures to combat money laundering and monitor compliance with international sanctions. Representatives of the member states agreed to intensify cross-border exchanges of financial information in order to prevent suspicious capital flows and protect the integrity of the regional banking system.
Governor of the National Bank of Moldova Anca Dragu said that the banking sector in the Republic of Moldova is “stable, well-capitalized, and well-governed,” noting that the institution promotes the country’s alignment with European practices in the field of financial supervision. She emphasized that hosting the conference reflects the active role of the Republic of Moldova in strengthening cooperation among banking supervisory authorities and in moving closer to the European architecture of financial supervision.
In turn, the NBM Vice Governor and acting BSCEE President, Constantin Șchendra, highlighted the importance of cooperation between regulatory authorities and the need for rapid-response mechanisms to systemic risks.
The conference concluded with the establishment of common lines of action for the coming period, with priorities including the digitalization of banking supervision processes and the adaptation of the regulatory framework to the new realities of the global financial market.
The Group of Banking Supervisors from Central and South-Eastern Europe was founded in 1991 and brings together banking supervision authorities from 24 countries, with the objective of strengthening cooperation and the exchange of experience among member states.
