30 MW Photovoltaic park with battery storage to be built in Vadul lui Vodă
A photovoltaic park with an installed capacity of 30 MW and a 60 MWh battery energy storage system will be built in Vadul lui Vodă. The Ministry of Energy has initiated the approval procedure for the construction of the park.
According to the institution, the project provides for the installation of a battery system capable of storing the energy produced during periods of high generation and delivering it to the electricity grid during peak consumption hours. The 60 MWh storage capacity will allow energy to be supplied at maximum power for approximately two hours.
The authorities state that storage solutions are among the most efficient models for developing renewable energy projects, as they allow the transfer of excess energy produced during the day to the high-consumption intervals in the evening hours.
The Ministry of Energy specified that storage capacities of approximately 150 MWh are already operational on the Moldovan market, and in the near future they are expected to exceed 200 MWh. In the longer term, the authorities estimate the need to install around 600 MW of storage capacity to integrate additional volumes of renewable energy and cover consumption during peak hours.
In this context, the institution announced that it is in the process of approving legislation on customs duty exemptions for energy storage batteries and wind power plants, with VAT reimbursement.
The project in Vadul lui Vodă comes in the context of the accelerated development of the electricity market in the Republic of Moldova and the recent launch of the day-ahead market and the intraday market operated by OPEM.
According to the Ministry of Energy, the new mechanisms allow energy trading at market prices and create conditions for investment in flexible power generation and energy storage capacities.
Under the legislation, power plants with an installed capacity greater than 20 MW must be authorized by Government Decision, due to the impact they may have on the electricity grid and on the balance of the national power system.
The Ministry of Energy announced that proposals and recommendations regarding the project may be submitted until June 5, 2026.
According to official data, the total installed capacity from renewable energy sources in the Republic of Moldova reached 1,023 MW at the end of April 2026, compared with less than 76 MW in 2020. The institution estimates that the development of storage capacities will play an essential role in strengthening the country’s energy security.
