Australia reaffirms support for Moldova's path toward European integration

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi met today with new Australian Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, based in Kyiv, Thomas Geoffrey Harold Bowan, on the presentation of his credentials.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the discussions, the two officials reaffirmed their shared interest in strengthening Moldovan-Australian relations, based on respect for international law, support for a rules-based international order, and the promotion of democratic values.

Popșoi appreciated Australia’s support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova, as well as its backing of the country’s European path.

For his part, Ambassador Thomas Geoffrey Harold Bowan commended the resilience of the Republic of Moldova’s democratic institutions and the authorities’ efforts to strengthen internal security and stability in the context of regional challenges.

“The Republic of Moldova values its constructive relations with Australia and the fact that, despite the geographical distance, we share the same values and the same vision regarding support for a rules-based international order, democracy, and peace. There is significant potential for deepening economic and investment cooperation, including in the fields of green energy, digital technologies, and innovation,” said Popșoi.

During the meeting, the officials also discussed opportunities for developing economic and investment cooperation, as well as the prospects created by Ukraine’s reconstruction process and the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union.

The Moldovan official wished the new ambassador success in carrying out his duties in the Republic of Moldova.

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Moldova and Australia were established on April 1, 1992.
