EU could increase support for Moldova and eastern neighborhood by 25 million euros

European Parliament's Budget Committee has voted on an amendment to the European Union Budget for 2026, requesting an increase of 25 million euros in allocations for the Eastern Neighborhood, including the Republic of Moldova. MEP Siegfried Mureșan made the statement today.

“We consider this increase necessary to partially compensate for the United States' decision to withdraw support for civil society in the region,” Mureșan stated.

He said “civil society plays an essential role in strengthening democracy in the countries in our neighborhood, especially in candidate countries like the Republic of Moldova, which face anti-democratic pressures and aggression from the Russian Federation.”

“In the context of the American withdrawal, we believe it is the European Union's duty to support independent non-governmental organizations so that they can continue their activities,” Mureșan said.

According to the MEP, the next step is to submit the amendment for approval by the plenary session of the European Parliament.

“If the amendment is approved, it will be part of the Parliament's position in the final negotiations with the Council and the European Commission regarding the EU Budget for 2026,” Mureșan explained.

He further emphasized that the European Union's support for civil society in Moldova and across the region is crucial for strengthening democracy and preventing external anti-democratic influences.

“It is essential to ensure the necessary resources for organizations working directly with local communities so that they can continue their projects and provide citizens with information and support during this difficult period,” concluded the MEP.

This year, the European Union approved a historic financial package for the Republic of Moldova, amounting to 1.9 billion euros, intended to support economic reforms and the country's integration into the European Union. This support is part of Moldova's Growth Plan for 2025–2027.

Out of the total sum, 385 million euros will be provided as non-reimbursable grants, and 1.5 billion euros will be granted as loans with favorable conditions.
