Moldovan parliament speaker reacts to teachers' strike, says leadership values teachers
The authorities promise good news for educators in 2026. Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu has made statements to this effect, in response to the demands of the teachers who protested on December 16, calling for salary increases. Grosu noted that the Salary Law was to be revised and assured that teachers' salaries, whose work is appreciated and essential for the education of growing generations, will be considered.
The speaker noted that he was aware of the problems in the educational system, emphasizing that he also hails from the ranks of teachers. Igor Grosu appreciated the work of those employed in the education sector, stressing that the authorities would honor their responsibilities towards teachers.
‘’I also come from this guild, and I have teachers in my family. I know the problems, I live alongside them, and we promise that, next year, we will bring good news. Presently, we want to put order in Law 270 regarding salary, which has been distorted over time. There have been certain institutions of crucial importance in the electoral process, I mean the Central Electoral Commission and the Audiovisual Council. Therefore, we promise that, next year, we will come up with better solutions, with the appropriate apologies. We care about the teachers’ community and have every respect for their work,' said Igor Grosu.
On December 16, teachers from more educational institutions of Moldova protested, demanding salary increases. Education employees have asked the government to increase the calculation coefficients by 21.5 per cent, in accordance with the ratio between the average salary on the economy and the salary in education.
