Parliament speaker says Moldova initiates technical negotiations on three chapters, more discipline to be needed

Moldova this week has started technical discussions on the initial chapters of negotiations for EU accession, and in this context, more discipline, predictability, and efficient organization will be needed. Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu made statements to this effect at the TV show, 'Secrets of Power' on Jurnal TV.

‘’We are starting negotiations on three chapters, and yes, more discipline, predictability and organization will be needed. This is what we need to focus on. At the political level and the openness of factions or deputies to contribute to the negotiation process, the approximation of legislation, there will be cases and cases. There will be situations where, I honestly believe and have seen, some MPs, some factions, will contribute, but there will also be factions that have a different agenda and will somehow aim to do everything possible to delay, postpone, and stall,’’ said Igor Grosu.

At the same time, Speaker Igor Grosu said that the opening of technical negotiations on the three chapters was an intermediate solution that would allow  Moldova to advance in the European integration process and not waste time until there is a political consensus for starting negotiations.

‘’It is an intermediate solution that allows us and Ukrainians, in the situation where there is that separate opinion of a member state regarding one of the candidate countries, to start negotiations, because the results of the latest report's evaluation are good for us. Not that we are boasting; they tell us that we are prepared and can move forward. What does this allow us to do? To start negotiations. Moreover, our partners can evaluate our progress, and when there is this consensus, as it is about consensus at the EU member states’ level, there must be consensus for the political decision to open the negotiations, so we do not waste this very precious time, and so it can be accounted for, evaluated, and considered in the progress reports, the period we will go through in technical negotiations, at the technical level,’’ the parliament speaker noted.

This week, Moldova has initiated technical discussions on the initial negotiation chapters for EU accession - Fundamental Values, Internal Market and External Relations.

The Moldovan authorities emphasize that this stage marks a crucial phase of the accession negotiations, which will underpin future progress in Moldova's process of integration into the European Union.
