VIDEO // Moldova, Romania strengthen strategic partnership: economic cooperation, Infrastructure's development as priorities for 2026
Moldova and Romania have the world's strongest partnership, as their interests are not only aligned, but also rooted in a common national interest. Romania's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Toiu made statements to this effect in Chisinau today; she attended the Meeting of Heads of Diplomatic Missions and Consular Offices of the Moldova abroad. Toiu conveyed a clear message of strong support on the path to European integration, emphasizing that Moldova and Romania are at the center of international attention.
In the morning, the Romanian official had a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi, alongside whom he made statements to the press.
Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi welcomed, in Chisinau, the visit of Romania's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Silvia Toiu, emphasizing the special nature of the relationship between the two states, based on common values of history, language, and traditions. Following bilateral discussions, the Moldovan official highlighted Romania's constant support for Moldova in both the process of European integration and the strengthening of security, defense, and society’s resilience.According to Popsoi, this support is also visible through the infrastructure projects carried out on both sides of the Prut River, especially the construction of bridges that will connect Moldova to the Union Highway, thus enhancing the country’s investment attractiveness.
“I am delighted to host today in Chisinau the Romanian Foreign Minister, Oana Silvia Toiu, a true friend of Moldova, especially now, on the brink of the holidays. Following the discussions we had, we can say: “The year has good signs,” thanks to the special relationship Moldova has with Romania, a relationship based on common values of history, language, and traditions. Romania is the closest state to Moldova, whether we talk about the process of European integration or about strengthening security, defense and society’s resilience. Romania has always been by our side. This can be seen with the naked eye for all those who want to see the infrastructure projects which take place on both banks of the Prut River and over it, such as the construction of bridges that will connect Moldova to the Union Highway, which will enhance the investment attractiveness of Moldova,” Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi said.
“We have what is called the strongest diplomatic partnership between two countries in the world, as the interests of our countries are not only aligned, but they are national interests that are successfully fulfilled and become stronger as long as we pursue them together. Romania's foreign policy priorities are quite clear - we are talking about the safety and security of our citizens, economic growth, economic diplomacy and rebuilding trust by creating stronger bridges with the Romanian community in the Diaspora. On all these three fronts, we discussed how to strengthen them and the good cooperation we currently have. I have conveyed to my diplomatic colleagues in Moldova a message of close collaboration, in order to achieve the objectives related to European integration, strengthening security, resilience and the rule of law,” said Oana Toiu, who participated today in the Meeting of Heads of Diplomatic Missions and Consular Offices of Moldova from abroad.
Economic cooperation was another key subject of the discussions. Trade exchanges between Moldova and Romania have reached the threshold of three billion euros, and Romanian investments in Moldova amount to approximately 300 million euros. The Moldovan official deemed these results commendable, emphasizing the need to further increase the volume of exchanges and investments for the benefit of citizens in both states.
“European integration also means interconnection with the single market, including in the field of transport and energy, so we have made progress in these directions, with the works on the Ungheni–Ungheni bridge - the first bridge to be built in decades, which will ensure Moldova's connection with Romania and the European Union at the highway level. We are also working on modernizing and constructing other bridges over the Prut, and in the energy field, we have on the agenda two exceptionally important power lines for energy security: Moldova–Suceava–Balti and Gutinas–Straseni,” said Oana Toiu.
Romania's Minister of Foreign Affairs noted that her presence in Chisinau was also an opportunity to summarize a year considered “extremely important” for Moldova and Romania. The Romanian official highlighted the elections in 2025.“The citizens of Moldova have once again decided, through their vote, that their future is European. It was a very clear, very determined message that was heard in the EU. Moldova and Romania are at the center of the EU's attention, at the center of international attention, thanks to the way our citizens, our societies have shown resilience in the face of threats, hybrid attacks and thanks to the way the public response was organized. This has shown our capacity to protect and further invest in the European project,” said Toiu.
Romania continues to support Moldova in a wide range of fields, including education and social infrastructure, by renovating kindergartens and schools, as well as by providing school transportation. The two officials assured the continuation of cooperation for the benefit of citizens on both sides of the Prut River.
“The most important thing for us is how we support, through our missions, through our diplomatic teams, the connection with our citizens, wherever they have decided to build their lives, their future. The way back home is, as President Nicusor Dan said, a path we want to contribute to. We have very clear intentions to work together, in order to promote the Romanian language and access for our common Diaspora to it - young families with children who need the connection to the notion of 'home,' strengthened by the Romanian language,” said Oana Toiu.
“We are extremely grateful to Romania, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the President of Romania and Romanian citizens for always having this relationship with the citizens of Moldova. In 2026, we aim to strengthen this relationship, this strategic partnership we have, and undoubtedly, the benefits of this partnership, this special relationship with our brothers and sisters in Romania, will continue to be seen in the increase in quality of life, the increase in safety and well-being here, in Moldova, which for our friends is also home,” said Mihai Popsoi.
At the same time, the Moldovan deputy PM emphasized the importance of close diplomatic dialogue between the two countries, mentioning the constant, firm and selfless support Moldova enjoys internationally on behalf of Romania. For the year 2026, the Moldovan authorities aim to strengthen the bilateral relationship and strategic partnership with Romania, betting on concrete effects in improving the quality of life, safety and well-being of Moldova’s citizens.
