EES system to be extended to five Moldovan-Romanian border crossing points as of March 2
The European Union's Entry/Exit System (EES) will become operational at five additional Moldovan-Romanian border crossing points. The measure will be applied starting from March 2, 2026.
According to the Border Police, these are the following crossing points: Leuseni-Albita; Sculeni-Sculeni; Leova-Bumbata; Giurgiulesti-Galati, port and rail; Ungheni-Iasi, rail.
Presently, the system is operational at the following border crossing points: Costesti-Stanca”, since October 12, 2025; Giurgiulesti-Galati, since November 24, 2025; Cahul-Oancea, since November 24, 2025; Lipcani-Radauti Prut, since January 9, 2026.
The EES system applies to citizens of non-EU states who make short stays on the territory of the European Union – up to 90 days within a 180-day period. For each non-EU citizen entering Romania through the border points where the system is already operational, EES records the date and place of entry and exit and collects alphanumeric and biometric data – facial image and four fingerprints. The duration of legal stay is then calculated automatically.
At the first entry after the system’s activation, data are collected and during subsequent trips, the verification will be carried out automatically, reducing waiting times at the border.
Additional details for travelers are available on the European Union’s official platform: https://travel-europe.europa.eu/en/ees.
