Local elections 2026: CEC announces start of election campaign
The Central Electoral Commission has announced that starting today, 17 April 2026, the official election campaign period has begun for registered candidates in the new local elections and for participants in the local referendums scheduled for 17 May.
According to the CEC, electoral contestants and referendum participants are required to conduct their campaigns under conditions of fairness, transparency and integrity, in strict compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Code.
The institution draws attention to the fact that the use of administrative resources for electoral purposes is prohibited. Thus, candidates may not use public assets, state institutions’ equipment or projects financed from the public budget for political promotion.
At the same time, public authorities and equivalent institutions are not allowed to grant advantages, goods or other forms of support to electoral contestants, except under equal conditions and on the basis of contracts.
The CEC also notes that during the campaign period concerts, contests and other public events organized with the involvement of artists or creative personnel are prohibited if they are used for electoral promotion or include political slogans and symbols.
Instead, electoral contestants have the right to organize meetings with voters, and local public administration authorities are obliged to ensure equal conditions for holding these gatherings.
The new local elections and local referendums will take place on 17 May 2026 in several localities of the Republic of Moldova. 40 polling stations will be opened.
