Moldovan government's secretary general says country's localities can become stronger, only if we unite our efforts, resources, administrative capacities

Our localities can become stronger, only if we unite our efforts, resources and administrative capacities. The local public administration reform is the way we want to bring more efficiency and development to each community. Secretary General of the Government Alexei Buzu made statements to this effect at the event, Strong Mayoralties – Developed Settlements, held on the Great National Assembly Square (PMAN) of Chisinau.

“Today, we are discussing the future of our communities, about villages and towns that must have good roads, water, sewage, functional public services and administrations capable of attracting more development funds,” said Alexei Buzu in his opening remarks at the event.

The government’s secretary general underlined that, in recent months, constructive consultations and discussions on the local public administration reform had been organized with mayors, local and district councilors, community representatives and engaged citizens.

“The conclusion is clear: our localities can become stronger, only if we unite our efforts, resources and administrative capacities. The local public administration reform is the way we want to bring more efficiency and development to each community. We are not reforming for the sake of reform. We are doing it for people, for better services, for localities that can attract investments and can grow. And we can build this only together – local authorities, shoulder to shoulder with central authorities and development partners,” the official said.

Alexei Buzu noted that, so far, there are 681 decisions to initiate the amalgamation process, covering 86 per cent of the town halls in the country.

“This is a good signal, a sign of courage, responsibility and commitment to your own citizens. It is an example for all of us. Personally, I want to thank you for this,” stressed the secretary general of the government.

The official thanked Romania and Romanian acting Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, who is present at the today’s event.

“I thank Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan for the support provided by Romania. The kindergarten in my village, which my child now attends, was fully renovated with Romania’s generous support. I also thank the mayors from Romania, with whom day by day we twin, consult and learn from one another. I also want to thank President Maia Sandu for the support provided in this important and complex process,” concluded Alexei Buzu.

Over 400 mayors from localities that have initiated the voluntary amalgamation process, district heads, members of relevant organizations and external partners today participate in the Strong Mayoralties – Developed Settlements event, held on the Great National Assembly Square (PMAN).

The event is dedicated to the local public administration reform and the strengthening of administrative capacities. The discussions will focus on how the authorities intend to build strong mayoralties, capable of attracting external funds, implementing major projects and providing good services to people.
