Moldovan PM says attack in Galati shows threats of war real for entire region

Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu has condemned the drone attack carried out on against a residential building in the city of Galati, Romania, on May 29 morning. Two people required medical care and dozens of residents were evacuated in the wake of the incident.

“We strongly condemn the irresponsible actions that led to the hitting of a residential building in Galati by a Russian drone. Our thoughts are with those affected and we stand in solidarity with Romania,” said Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu.

The PM emphasized that the incident, which occurred near the border of Moldova, shows that the risks triggered by the war launched by the Russian Federation against Ukraine remain a direct threat to the region.

“This incident, taking place only a short distance from the border of Moldova, is a grim reminder that the risks created by Russia’s war are real and remain dangerously close to our region. We will continue to strengthen our resilience and work closely with our European partners to protect peace, security and stability,” the prime minister added.

A drone on May 29 crashed onto the roof of an apartment block in Galati, with the impact followed by an explosion and a fire breaking out in an apartment on the 10th floor.

The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations of Romania informed that the fire had been extinguished shortly afterwards and 70 people were evacuated from the building. At the same time, two people received medical care at the scene.

Romania’s Ministry of National Defence stated that, during a new wave of Russian attacks on infrastructure in Ukraine, a Geran-2 type drone entered Romanian airspace and was tracked by radar as far as the south of the municipality of Galati, where it crashed into the residential block.

According to the initial conclusions of the investigation carried out by experts from the Ministry of National Defence, the Interior Ministry and the Romanian Intelligence Service, the entire explosive payload of the Russian-origin drone detonated on impact.
