Moldovan MP says Foreign Affairs Ministry sends protest note to Ukraine, after Ukrainian border guards illegally crossed Dniester River

The Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) has sent a protest note to Ukraine after two border guards from the neighboring country illegally crossed the state border and entered the territory of Moldova, while attempting to detain a Ukrainian citizen. The information was confirmed by Lilian Carp, chair of the parliamentary commission for national security, defense and public order, during the „La 360 de grade” (At 360 Degrees) programme on Radio Moldova.

„The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ministry sent a protest note regarding this, more precisely, illegal crossing. Nothing justifies such conduct by border guards, including the illegal crossing by a citizen. What the Ukrainian border guards did does not conform to any ethical standards or normal conduct. As far as I know, this incident was discussed with the Ukrainian authorities,” Lilian Carp said.

The Ukrainian citizen targeted by the detention operation has requested asylum in Moldova, and his application could be accepted if the conditions stipulated by law are met, Lilian Carp said.

„According to the legislation, he may apply for asylum on the territory of Moldova. After meeting all requirements, he will most likely be granted asylum,” Lilian Carp said.

According to the Border Police, on October 15, near the village of Holosnita, two Ukrainian border guards crossed the state border from Ukraine into Moldova during an operation to detain a Ukrainian citizen.
